Robert E. Bertolino, 76, of Canton, passed away unexpectedly September 12.

Born in Boston, he was raised in Roslindale and graduated from Boston Tech High School. He went on to earn his BS and MS in civil engineering from Northeastern University. As a co-op student, Bob began working at Fay, Spofford & Thorndike in Burlington, where he spent the rest of his 47-year career, ultimately as director and senior vice president. He considered himself privileged to work every day in a job that combined both his passion for the ocean and civil engineering. He and his teams have left their mark up and down the east coast and California with projects that included shipyards, piers, and naval installations; Bob was a registered professional engineer in several states. He retired in 2014.

Bob enjoyed gardening, wine-making, spending time at Castle Island, and above all, being with his family. He took exceptional pride in his children and grandchildren.

Beloved husband for 53 years of Grace M. (Amico); father of Robert E. Bertolino, Jr. and his wife, Carrie, of North Andover, Paul D. Bertolino and his wife, Christine, of Mansfield, David J. Bertolino and his wife, Leigh, of Dunwoody, GA, and Michelle M. Kaelin and her husband, Fred, of Northboro; and grandfather of Justin, Olivia, Robert E. III, Sonia, Emma, Nicholas, Grace, Max, Cole, Freddie and Luca.

Visiting hours are at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street, on Thursday (today) from 4-8 p.m. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, only 25 guests are allowed in the funeral home at a time. Masks are required, and guests should bring their own pens to sign the register book. Funeral mass in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton on Friday at 10 a.m. Burial at Canton Corner Cemetery.
