Randolph-Washington intersection redesign underway

Delayed all last spring and summer with equipment and design issues and again in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, the Randolph-Washington Street intersection project is now back on track and slated for completion by early to mid August.

Approved for funding at the May 2019 town meeting, the redesign calls for the installation of a new three-way traffic signal, a pedestrian island, and designated turning lanes. The total cost of the project is around $460,000.

DPW Superintendent Mike Trotta confirmed that construction began in early June and the contractor has been working on curbing and pavement milling. The light stanchion and mast arms, which largely delayed the project, are due in Canton by late July. Once delivered, the light would take approximately five days to be installed, and Trotta expects it to be functioning by August 10. The full-time light will be coordinated with other traffic lights on Washington Street.

Trotta also provided an update on several other infrastructure projects throughout the town.

On Neponset Street, work continues on the new intersection at Revolution Way, which is located opposite Norfolk Street and is the new main roadway through the Paul Revere Heritage Site. A crew from Meninno Construction is now working on the short piece of road (including curbing) that links the new steel bridge to Neponset Street. The traffic light for the intersection is due to be ordered and could take another five months before delivery. Once the road has been completed, it will be up to the Select Board to decide if the bridge can be operational before the light is installed.

Meanwhile, two other intersection projects have progressed to the design stage after receiving funding at the June 22 town meeting.
