The Canton Fire Department held a ceremony on Monday to honor 7-year-old Franky Barbour of Canton, whose quick actions helped to save his father after his clothes caught on fire.

Frank Barbour Sr. had been burning leaves in his backyard on the afternoon of May 2 when his clothing ignited. Realizing his father was in trouble, Franky ran inside to tell his mother to call 911. Fire Chief Charles Doody said Frank was badly burned and transported by ambulance to a Boston hospital, but he has since fully recovered and is back at work.

Doody said Franky reacted well, did not panic, and quickly notified his mother to call 911. “He did a great job in staying calm under pressure,” Doody said. The department presented Franky with a lifesaver pin, junior firefighter badge, and a plaque.

Canton Police Chief Ken Berkowitz noted that Canton Officer Bill Branca is a task force officer assigned to the DEA.

“Our detectives did a great job apprehending this criminal and executing the subsequent search warrant,” Berkowitz said. “The Canton Police Department is committed to helping people suffering from addiction; however, we will do anything we can to arrest and prosecute people that deal drugs and import violence into our community.”

U.S Attorney Andrew Lelling said 24 members and associates of a Boston-based street gang were charged in federal court with trafficking cocaine in a Brighton housing development and separately operating a large-scale drug trafficking organization.
