MAC: Coronavirus Deaths in Canton

By

Did you know …

According to Massachusetts state officials reporting coronavirus deaths at long-term care facilities, the Hellenic Nursing and Rehab Center on Sherman Street in Canton had 25 deaths while Orchard Cove on Route 138 had 11 deaths as of May 30, 2020. That is 36 deaths in just two long-term care facilities in Canton. The state’s largest outbreak, with 76 COVID-related deaths and one of the worst hotspots in the country, was the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke. Facilities that border the town of Canton with the most reported coronavirus deaths were Care One in Randolph with 36 and Norwood Healthcare with 29. Stoughton reported 25 deaths, 14 at Blue Hills Health and Rehab and 11 at Copley at Stoughton, as of May 27. Brockton listed 39 deaths at their long-term facilities. As of May 31, there were 277 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Canton and 96,965 in Massachusetts.

MAC recently received a pamphlet from the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds that included the “History of Norfolk County.” Norfolk County was established in 1793, and originally consisted of the towns of Bellingham, Braintree, Brookline, Cohasset, Dedham, Dorchester, Dover, Foxborough, Franklin, Medfield, Medway, Milton, Needham, Quincy, Randolph, Roxbury, Sharon, Stoughton, Walpole, Weymouth, and Wrentham. It had an area of 445 square miles and a population of 23,828. As Massachusetts developed, boundaries of and within the county have changed. Additional towns have been incorporated: Canton (1797), Hyde Park (1868), Norfolk (1870), Norwood (1872), Holbrook (1872), Wellesley (1881), Millis (1885), Avon (1888), Westwood (1897), and Plainville (1905). Four communities have been annexed to the city of Boston and thereby returned to Suffolk County: Roxbury, Dorchester, West Roxbury, and Hyde Park. Norfolk County is now made up of 28 communities, including two — Brookline and Cohasset — that are not contiguous with the rest of the county.

The town of Wareham has changed its slogan from the “Gateway to Cape Cod” to “It’s Better Before the Bridges.”

Talking about Wareham, Attorney Glen Hannington, senior vice president of the Wareham Gatemen baseball team in the 10-team Cape Cod Baseball League, recently told MAC that the league has canceled the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic. The league is the premier summer league for college players and has helped to develop many MLB stars. The Cape Cod Baseball League Executive Committee, of which Hannington is a member, recently voted unanimously to cancel the 2020 season. The league is a nonprofit organization and is run entirely by volunteers with players spending the summer with host families and each team operating with volunteer staff. According to Attorney Hannington, the Cape will lose approximately $3.5 to $5 million with the league closure and about 300,000 to 400,000 people that attend the Cape Cod League games.

Governor Charlie Baker recently nominated Kirsten L. Hughes, the former chairman of the Massachusetts Republican Party, to the position of clerk magistrate of the Stoughton District Court. The post, a lifetime appointment, pays $155,084 annually.

The new deadline to register to vote in the 2020 Canton town election is Friday, June 5, which is tomorrow. The election, originally scheduled for April 7, will be held on Tuesday, June 16.

The Canton Community Theatre has postponed its production of Agnes of God to September 11, 12, 18 and 19 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, September 13 and 20 at 2 p.m. Tickets will be available at cantoncommunitytheatre.org in August.
