Herbert J. Gillis, 88, of Canton, passed away April 10 at home surrounded by his loving family.

Born in Boston, he was raised in Dorchester, graduated from Dorchester High School, Northeastern University, and served in the United States Army Reserves during the Korean War. He has lived in Canton since 1963 and was an engineer for several engineering firms before retiring from R. Duffy Associates. Herb was an avid dancer and he and his wife enjoyed competing in many ballroom dancing competitions. He loved spending time with his family and enjoyed researching family lineage.

Beloved husband for 65 years of Joan M. (Hamel). Father of Charles H. Gillis and his wife, Cindi Curran, of Braintree, Jean Marie Rotella and her husband, Frank, of Canton, Linda M. Dart and her partner, Todd Richardson, of Attleboro, and Maureen A. Lambert and her husband, Gary, of North Easton. He was predeceased by his siblings, Catherine McWilliams, Lawrence Gillis, Ann Ruell, Martina Duffy, Loretta Bertolon, Rosemarie Mulhern, Genevieve Callahan, Joan Keenan, and Joseph Gillis. He was the last of the “Gillis Clan.” Also survived by 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
