News Notes: CPD implements new procedures

By

The Canton Police Department has issued new guidance regarding the reporting of non-emergency situations and clerical interactions in an effort to safeguard the health of the community and CPD personnel. Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said the CPD has set up three email accounts that will enable residents to receive police services without having to leave their homes. “It will also help to ensure your safety and ours and avoid any unnecessary exposures,” said Berkowitz. To report minor property crime such as identity theft, vandalism or small larceny, contact reports@town.canton.ma.us and an officer will follow up with you by telephone. To renew a firearms permit or license to carry, please scan your application and send it to ltc@town.canton.ma.us. To submit a motor vehicle accident report, email MVA@town.canton.ma.us and attach your report. The department will not be taking new firearms applications until April 15. Child seat installations have also been postponed with a possible start-up date in April.

CFD suspends fire inspections, limits public access

Fire Chief Charles Doody has suspended all fire inspections indefinitely and is limiting public access to the fire station through the lobby entrance at the main station on Revere Street. Burning permits will still be allowed, but applicants should contact Fire Prevention Officer Tom Norton at tnorton@town.canton.ma.us or call 781-575-6654, ext. 3104. In other news, Doody said firefighters have been given personal protection equipment such as masks, gloves and a protective gown to prevent encountering victims of coronavirus. Those calling 911 and who suspect they have the virus will be asked specific questions so that emergency responders will be prepared before they arrive on site. Doody, who also serves as the town’s emergency preparedness coordinator, said the emergency operations center at the station is on standby status, although the current emergency caused by the coronavirus is focused on keeping people separated or isolated.
