CHS gymnasts snap multi-season losing skid

By

For the first time since the 2016-17 season, the Canton High gymnastics team recorded a victory against a Hockomock League opponent, beating Sharon 116.54-100.35.

In its victory and in a subsequent loss to Oliver Ames, Canton posted its two highest point totals of the season with the Bulldogs scoring 121.3 against the Tigers.

The team is relatively young with just two seniors, Hope Hays and Nina Gilmore, junior captains Nikki Desjardins and Genny Cordeiro, sophomores Ellie Ashcroft, Sarah Kardosz, Kelly McDonald, Jessica Vo and Taylor Reynolds, and freshmen Emma Berardi, Emily MacKay and Jenna Morgan. MacKay and Morgan have been consistently high scorers in multiple events for the Bulldogs.

Jenn Abbott, who co-coaches the team along with Sean Reardon, offered the following comments about the team and its first win.

“Having our first win was very exciting for the team and gave them a boost of confidence. Since then, they have been excited to add new things into their routines to increase the difficulty. It gave them a ton of energy to go out and show off their new skills; it really showed in Thursday’s meet [against OA] when we scored almost five points higher than our previous high score. We have increased our overall team score by almost 10 points from the first meet to our last. Each gymnast is not only adding skills, but perfecting the ones they already have, which is all contributing to the team score.”

The win against Sharon came last Tuesday as part of a tri-meet with Attleboro at the Bulldogs’ home gym, Metro South Gymnastics Academy on Revere Street. The Bombardiers’ had the highest team total of the meet at 126.1.

Morgan was Canton’s high scorer on floor (8.2) and vault (7.75) while MacKay led the way on beam (7.8) and bars (7.2).

The two freshmen were also the top scorers in the OA meet with Morgan posting an 8.5 on vault and 8.4 on floor and MacKay scoring an 8.2 on beam and 7.2 on bars.

Abbott noted that several other Canton gymnasts recorded personal bests in the meet.

The team’s next meet is scheduled for Sunday, February 9, at Spectrum Gymnastics in Brockton with Canton’s session beginning at 9:30 a.m.
