School board approves new school hours for 20-21

By

The Canton School Committee has endorsed the recommendation of school administrators to change school hours beginning in September 2020.

The length of the school day at the Galvin Middle School and Canton High School will increase by 10 minutes and five minutes, respectively, and the elementary schools will begin and end five minutes later than the current schedule. The length of the elementary school day will remain the same.

In addition, the Luce Elementary School will become the late starting school in 2020-21 in accordance with a pre-determined annual rotation (the JFK starts later this year).

School Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Fischer-Mueller said all of these changes have been approved in concert with the Canton Teachers Association (CTA). Also presenting the school start time and calendar was Debbie Rooney, PreK-8 director of teaching and learning.

The 10-minute extension at GMS will allow for more time for lunch (a frequent request by students) and Fischer-Mueller said the five-minute extension at CHS will help in planning daily scheduling.

The new hours for each school beginning in 2020-21 are as follows: Hansen and JFK, 8:40 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.; Luce, 9:10 a.m. to 3:25 p.m.; Rodman Early Childhood Center, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; GMS, 7:45 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.; and CHS, 8 a.m. to 2:29 p.m.

The committee also set the first day of school for grades 1-12 as September 3. There will be no school on Labor Day (September 7) and the first day for kindergarten and pre-K students will be September 8. The first day for school staff to report is September 1 …
