EMS coordinator releases opioid data for 2019

Emergency Medical Services Coordinator Kevin Hurley recently released annual data pertaining to opioid-related responses in 2019. According to Hurley, the Canton Fire Department administered the overdose-reversal drug Narcan (naloxone) 11 times in the past year, including twice each in February and August. Patients ranged in age from 24 to 71 and included six males and five females.

Det. John Ruane retires from Canton PD

Detective John Ruane has retired from the Canton Police Department after 26 years of service. He is a third generation CPD officer, following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, who both previously served as chief.

In July of 2018, Detective Ruane was diagnosed with a brain tumor and subsequently underwent treatment. This past November, nearly 200 people attended a 52nd birthday party in his honor at the Canton American Legion Hall. Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said at the time that he was in good spirits and had recently received a favorable medical report.

Firefighters help extinguish highway car fire

On Monday, December 30, at 11:35 p.m., Canton and Norwood firefighters responded to a car fire on I-95 north at the interchange with I-93. Fire Lt. Tom Norton said Canton firefighters arrived first and quickly got to work extinguishing the fire. The cause was determined to be mechanical in nature. Firefighters from Canton Engine 4 remained on scene until the roadway was cleaned and cleared. No injuries were reported.

For the week of December 30 through January 5, the CFD responded to 81 requests for service, including one opioid-related call. For the calendar year, Lt. Norton said the department responded to a total of 4,206 service calls, averaging 80 per week.
