Canton Citizen All-Decade Team

By

Canton’s Kevin Rooney (right) made his NHL debut against the Washington Capitals in March of 2017.

In celebration of a memorable and historic 10-year stretch of athletic achievement, the Canton Citizen is pleased to present its All-Decade Team, highlighting the top male and female Canton athletes of the 2010s. The complete list includes a 10-member first team and 10-member second team in addition to a list of honorable mentions. Selections were based on a number of criteria, including collegiate and post-collegiate accomplishments, contributions in other sports, individual awards and accolades, team success and overall championship impact.

Athlete of the Decade

Kevin Rooney (Berkshire School ’12)

A champion at three different levels and the embodiment of hard work and dedication, Kevin Rooney is the Citizen’s choice for Canton Athlete of the Decade. Starting off his hockey career as a prolific scorer, Rooney guided the Bulldogs to their first ever state title in 2010 while racking up 40 points and earning Hockomock MVP honors. Two years later, he was again the leading point-getter as he delivered the Berkshire Bears their first prep school championship. By the middle of the decade, he had become a key cog on the Providence College Friars team, and he also helped deliver that program its first national championship, assisting on the game-winning goal against BU at the TD Garden. By 2017, Rooney would find himself back at the Garden — only this time it was to play the Bruins as the newest member of the New Jersey Devils. His initial stint was short-lived as he was sent to the Devils’ minor league affiliate, but he has since worked his way back to the big club, appearing in 65 NHL games over the past two seasons and tallying seven goals and five assists.

Below are the list of athletes named to the All-Decade team. Read about the accomplishments of each in this week’s paper (1/9 edition), available now on newsstands throughout Canton.
