Canton Republicans want to set a tone for civil discourse

Recently the Canton Republican Town Committee (CRTC) invited the Canton Democratic Town Committee (CDTC) to engage in a series of public debates/forums to inform the citizens of Canton about the differences between the two parties. We suggested the first event be in the fall of 2019 or early 2020 since the Massachusetts presidential primary for Republicans and Democrats is March 3, 2020. The second event would be in the fall of 2020 before the November election. A representative of one of these two parties has been elected president of the United States continuously since 1852.

We were willing to discuss start times, duration, moderator and agenda with the CDTC before scheduling the event at perhaps Canton High School or the Canton Senior Center with live coverage by Canton Community TV. Unfortunately, and somewhat unexpectedly, the CDTC declined our invitation. “Thank you for your inquiry,” they responded. “The CDTC will consider it when we have one candidate, one platform.”

This could be a great attempt to show how the two parties can discuss issues and differences in a civil manner without the name calling and antagonism so evident on the national level. Indeed, the CRTC is hoping to set an example for our counterparts in Massachusetts and nationally. It may attract a much wider audience than Canton.

Although this particular idea for fall 2019 has gone over the Canton Reservoir Dam, so to speak, why wait until the CDTC “considers” accepting the invitation? Canton Republicans are willing to discuss the particulars of the Republican Party at any organization in Canton that offers an invitation. This includes the two mentioned above or the local chamber of commerce, Canton Town Club, American Legion, etc. Please feel free to call me at 781-821-5939 and we can discuss the details.
