It’s not enough to support the pool — we need your vote

By

Dear Canton voters:

From where I sat on Monday night, May 13, it appeared that town meeting’s vote in support of the town pool was unanimous. I’m not entirely surprised. Earlier this year, I asked many hundreds of voters why they moved to or choose to stay in Canton. The overwhelming response was our sense of community. Our houses of worship, schools, town library, senior center, town rink, playgrounds, parks, golf courses, and town pool all shape and define our community.

If our beautiful library and senior center can more aptly be described as community centers, then our town pool is our summer community center. For more than 5,000 residents each summer, what happens at the town pool makes summer “summer.”

Town meeting approval of a new pool was a necessary step but not sufficient to assure we will have a new pool after the present pool of 40-plus years breathes its last breath (hopefully, surviving this summer season). Voters must go to the polls on Tuesday, May 28, to vote Yes. The day after Memorial Day weekend may not be the easiest day to get to the polls. But if we want this community asset to survive, we must take 15 minutes to finish the job.

If you will not be available May 28, vote absentee (I’ve already voted). Otherwise, put a note in your electronic calendar, put a reminder on your refrigerator, or tie a string around your finger to remember to vote. Because if you wake up the day after the election having not voted, and the vote fails by one, you will have been reminded that every vote counts, but it will be too late.

Very truly yours,

Lisa Lopez
