Canton Rainbow Project 2019

The Canton Rainbow Project is happy to announce its initiative for 2019 to support the LGBTQ community in Canton during Pride Month in June. This year, a rainbow heart magnet with the green Canton “C” in the middle will be available for purchase. The magnet can be displayed on your vehicle as a show of support to Canton’s LGBTQ friends and neighbors.

In 2018, the Canton Rainbow Project offered rainbow flags for residents to hang at their homes and businesses. The hope is that participants saved their flags and project organizers look forward to seeing them around town starting in June. For those who do not already own a flag, they are available this time of year at iParty as well as through various online retailers.

According to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, LGBTQ youth are more likely than non-LGBTQ youth to struggle with their mental health. They are more than twice as likely to feel suicidal and over four times as likely to attempt suicide. However, a 2013 study showed that safe schools and support from caring adults can help protect LGBTQ youth from depression and suicidality.

LGBTQ adults are also more likely than others to have mental health or substance abuse problems. A 2015 survey found that one in three LGBTQ adults experienced mental illness in 2015 compared with only one in five heterosexual adults. Furthermore, a 2014 study found that LGBTQ people who live in communities with stigmatizing attitudes die an average of 12 years earlier than LGBTQ people in the least-stigmatizing communities.

Small steps like hanging a flag and putting a magnet on your car helps create a supportive environment by showing our LGBTQ friends and neighbors that Canton is a welcoming and supportive community.
