Board of Selectmen race headlines April 2 election

By

This coming Tuesday, April 2, is Election Day in Canton, and for the fourth time in five years voters will have a decision to make in the race for Board of Selectmen.

This year, three candidates — Lisa Lopez, Michael Loughran and James Quigley — are all vying for the two-year vacancy created by the resignation of former Selectman Kevin Feeney, while veteran incumbent John Connolly is running unopposed for a regular three-year term. The latter will be seeking his 11th consecutive term on the BOS whereas the three candidates in the other selectman race are each running for their first term.

Lopez, a retired corporate executive, has served the town as a member and past chairman of the Community Preservation Committee and as chairman of the Revere Heritage Commission’s Open Space Committee.

Loughran is wrapping up a second consecutive term on the School Committee, where he served as both chairman and vice chairman, and previously served a stint on the town’s Finance Committee.

Quigley served for over 30 years on the Canton Police Department, retiring in 2016 as a detective sergeant. He also serves on the Reservoir Pond Advisory Committee and is a past member of the Health Insurance Advisory Board.

Profiles of all three BOS candidates, including a chart comparing their views on a number of key community issues, can be found in the March 21 edition of the Canton Citizen. Additionally, two separate candidates forums — one presented by the Canton Citizen/Canton Community TV and the other hosted by the Blue Hills Civic Association/CHS Junior State of America — will air throughout the week on CCTV’s Community Station (see page 2 for cable listings).

The remaining eight candidates on the 2019 ballot are all running unopposed. Among them are four newcomers: Kristian Merenda and Maureen Moran, who are each running for a three-year School Committee seat, Kathy McCormack, who is running for a five-year Planning Board seat; and Nancy Connery, who is running for a three-year library trustee position. Incumbents running unopposed for reelection include William Galvin for Board of Assessors, Ruth Slattery for Board of Health, and Margaret Mead and Emily Prigot for library trustee.

Polls will be open to all registered voters on April 2 between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. at four locations: Canton High School for precincts 1 and 6; Dean S. Luce School for precinct 2; Blue Hills Regional for precinct 3; and John F. Kennedy School for precincts 4 and 5. An updated precinct map is also available at town.canton.ma.us/documentcenter/view/1857.
