Rugby tourney planned in memory of Anthony Maffie

This coming Saturday, March 30, the Curry College men’s rugby team, in partnership with the Curry Men in Nursing Club, will proudly present the inaugural Maffie Memorial 7’s Tournament — a day of sport, commemoration and bonding in memory of the late Anthony Maffie.

A Canton native and CHS graduate, Maffie, 22, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on January 4 from Sudden Unexplained Death in Epilepsy (SUDEP). His passing left a giant-sized hole in the hearts of his family and friends, not only in Canton but at Curry, where he had been working toward a nursing degree and had previously played rugby.

“Words can’t express how much we miss him,” the Curry rugby team stated in a Facebook post. “His charm, kindness, and that warming smile were just a few of the reasons we loved Anthony Maffie so much. [Rest in peace], brother.”

Idris Khiyaty, Maffie’s best friend and a fellow nursing student, said the upcoming Memorial 7’s Tournament is a chance for those who knew and loved Maffie to “come together to celebrate his legacy and honor him as an athlete and a nursing student.”

Eight teams are scheduled to compete in the tournament, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Curry College in Milton. It marks the first time that Curry rugby has hosted a tournament and promises to be a “spectacle to see and a day to remember.”

All proceeds from the tournament will be donated to the Epilepsy Foundation to help promote awareness of epilepsy and SUDEP through its “Light the Way Today” campaign. While few are aware that epilepsy can be fatal, the difficult reality is that one in 1,000 adults with this disorder die every year from SUDEP, and the risk increases to one in 150 for people whose seizures are poorly controlled.
