Dear Editor:

Please join us on Tuesday, March 26, at 7 p.m. in the Canton Public Library’s Aldrich Room to discuss how best we can join together at town meeting to support a new pool for the town of Canton.

Canton’s current town pool is old and in a constant state of disrepair. It has served Canton well in the past, but now is the time to replace it.

The pool provides important recreational opportunities for families, children, and seniors. It is one of the few places in Canton that services the whole community. It provides swim and water safety instruction, skills that can save lives. Seniors are offered water aerobics instruction to support healthy exercise. It is also a fun place to be on a hot summer day.

Instruction for even the youngest swimmers introduces them to a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime. Programs at the Canton town pool have encouraged many Canton children with or without disabilities to participate in the Dolphins program. The Dolphins encourages both individual skill building and team spirit. For decades the Dolphins has served as the feeder program for Canton High School’s outstanding swim team. This year Canton High School’s girls swim team won the Hockomock Davenport Division, a recognition of each student’s hard work over many years at the town pool.

Lisa Lopez, candidate for selectman, has offered to join us at the meeting in support of the town meeting pool amendment.

Without strong vocal community support the Canton town pool amendment will not pass.

Please join us on March 26 at 7 p.m. at the Canton Public Library to talk about how we can make this happen.
