Canton environmental group backs Green New Deal

By

Dear Editor:

Climate change is here and increasingly affecting all of us. Canton recently conducted a study of the increasing hazards and risks of the climate crisis, including flooding, fires, extreme heat and catastrophic weather events. The study made great strides toward developing local and regional mitigation and adaptation strategies for Canton residents. However, efforts to halt the climate crisis are even more vital. Climate scientists conclude that we can still avoid the catastrophic consequences of escalating global temperatures (caused primarily by fossil fuel use) if we act rapidly.

Both the November 2018 federal government-issued National Climate Assessment 3 and the October 2018 UN-issued Intergovernmental Panel Report support these conclusions and state that we have between 10 and 12 years to halt climate change by rapidly transitioning to a sustainable, renewable, equitable energy economy. This is to preserve the climate that human civilization has depended on for millennia.

Canton Residents: Toward an Equitable, Sustainable Future support the resolution for a Green New Deal from Rep. Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Markey. This bipartisan and common-sense resolution is designed to halt climate change while creating millions of green jobs. Canton Residents: Toward an Equitable, Sustainable Future (formerly No Canton Gas Pipeline) worked with many other environmental groups to stop Spectra Energy (now Enbridge) from building the Access Northeast project — a new high pressure fracked gas pipeline through Canton for export to Canada. We also stand with Weymouth residents in opposing the Atlantic Bridge Pipeline and Compressor Station.

Sincerely,

Jennifer Wexler, founder and president, and Tammy Rose, treasurer
