News Notes: MSBA denies funding request for GMS renovation

By

The Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) notified the Canton School Department last week that it will not accept its application for funds to renovate the Galvin Middle School in the next round of funding. School Business Administrator Barry Nectow said Canton was one of 70 applicants, of which the MSBA selected 10-15 for funding. Canton plans to reapply in 2019. School Committee Chairman Kristin Mirliani said a school building feasibility study is continuing and will be discussed at a future board meeting. Making the announcement at the December 12 special town meeting, Mirliani said the MSBA decision will delay progress on the GMS renovation for at least a year.

Truck driver rescued after striking utility pole

The driver was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital for minor injuries.

The heat from the wires had also ignited the utility pole, and Dan Road remained closed while firefighters doused the fire. DPW workers were called in to assess damage to the road. While all fire apparatus cleared the scene at 4 a.m., the road remained closed for repairs.

For the week of December 10-16, firefighters responded to 83 calls for service, none of which were opioid related.
