Michael D. Merchant, 43, of Branford, CT, formerly of Canton, passed away September 15.

Born in Somerville, he was raised in Canton and graduated from Xaverian Brothers High School. Michael was a skilled athlete and was captain of the hockey and soccer teams at Xaverian and he went on to play junior hockey after graduation. After a year of junior hockey he attended North Adams College where he played on the hockey team and later attended UMass Boston. Michael worked for many years as a union mason and bricklayer.

Beloved son of Mary C. (Sullivan) and John E. Merchant of Canton and Falmouth. Brother of Melissa Kirk and her husband, Peter, of Canton and Brendan Merchant and his wife, Lindsey, of Canton. Uncle of Abigail and Rebecca Kirk and Sydney, Lucy, and Catherine Merchant. Grandson of the late Leonard and Bernadette Merchant and Leo and Marie Sullivan. Also survived by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A funeral mass was held Thursday in St. John the Evangelist Church in Canton. Burial private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Virginia C. Merchant Scholarship Fund, P.O.
