In addition to the dam repairs on Pleasant Street and utility work on Revere Street, construction is ongoing on Dedham Street as part of phase 1 of the I-95/Dedham St. Interchange Improvement Project — a massive, $44-million, state-funded infrastructure improvement project that is expected to take an estimated five years to complete.

Plans call for the complete reconfiguration of a large stretch of Dedham Street — from Kirby Drive to an area west of the Neponset River — including the addition of new travel lanes (increasing from one to two lanes in each direction), a new off-ramp from I-95 northbound, widening of bridges over the Neponset River and the railroad tracks, and replacement of the bridge over I-95.

In addition, traffic signals will be installed at Shawmut Road and the two I-95 ramps (existing southbound on-ramp and new northbound off-ramp), and a dedicated turning lane will be added to allow vehicles traveling westbound on Dedham Street to turn left onto I-95 south. The project also calls for the construction of a sidewalk on the north side of Dedham Street, new bike lanes on both sides of the street, and a new walkway leading to the Signal Hill property.

According to MassDOT spokesperson Patrick Marvin, construction crews have thus far “put in place traffic logistics and are carrying out activities such as landscaping, installing retaining walls, utility relocations, working on the Neponset River Bridge, and working on the Amtrak west abutment/University Road.”

Marvin said there are currently are no scheduled closures of Dedham Street, and MassDOT officials had previously indicated plans to maintain a minimum of one lane of access in each direction throughout the construction period. Any detours, they said, would be minimal and would be “planned, coordinated, and publicized in advance.”

“In the upcoming months, MassDOT will be installing new girders for the Neponset River Bridge and the Amtrak Bridge,” said Marvin. “This work will take place during overnight hours and will require single-lane closures. Please also note that MassDOT crews will continue working through the winter as weather conditions allow. The majority of this work will consist of utility operations.”

The current expected schedule of construction operations is as follows:

* June 2017 – June 2019: Bridge widening on the south side of Dedham Street

* July 2019 – September 2019: Permanent utility installation

* October 2019: Building temporary utility boxes

* November 2019 – 2021: Utility work to remove overhead wires as well as bridge widening on the north side of Dedham Street

* 2021 – 2022: Utility work, ramp construction, remainder of I-95 bridge widening, final paving and signage.
