BOS seeks funding for Newhouse Waterfront upgrades

Selectmen were quite pleased with the work of planning consultant KZLA in drafting a working master plan for improving the Earl Newhouse Waterfront Area on Reservoir Pond.

On Tuesday night, the board asked Town Planner Laura Smead to apply for grants as well as Community Preservation Act funding in the coming fiscal year. They also asked KZLA to continue to hold public discussions about the plan.

Kyle Zick and Danielle Desilets of KZLA estimated the first round of improvements to cost roughly $500,000. Smead said it is possible that Canton could receive up to $200,000 in grants if the town shows some financial commitment. Toward that end, Selectman Kevin Feeney suggested that Smead also make a request to the Capital Planning Committee while Selectman Tom Theodore suggested that some in-house work and materials could help to lessen the cost. Selectmen Chairman Mark Porter said there are also several Eagle Scout projects that could support the work at the waterfront area.

The first phase of the project could pay for parking and paving, signage, and boat and kayak launches. Parking and access improvements were the most popular improvements identified by residents in public meetings and surveys conducted by KZLA. Others included trail improvements, better restroom facilities, and designated areas for swimming, fishing and boating. The state Office of Fishing and Boating Access has determined that only a car-top boat launch would be appropriate for the area.
