With the first practices of the 2018 season getting underway this week, CHS head football coach Dave Bohane recently announced the winners of the team’s offseason weightlifting and strength awards.

The weightlifting program began in early December and was held throughout the winter and spring and continued this summer with daily 6:30 a.m. workouts Monday through Thursday. Bohane said 25 to 30 players actively attended the sessions.

Players were recently tested for strength, speed and agilty, and one team member, junior running back Gersom Rivera, set modern-day records in both the 40-yard dash (4.48 seconds) and the vertical jump (35”). Rivera also impressed in the agility drill with a 20-yard shuttle run of 4.19 seconds.

On the weightlifting side, senior offensive-defensive tackle Brian Campagna had the highest marks in the squat (420 lbs.), bench press (310 lbs.), and power clean (265 lbs.). Quarterback John Hagan won the hurdle hops competition, executing 70 in one minute.

Earning lifter of the month honors were sophomore Maya Abuelbasher, who never missed a workout, and junior Vickie Revanche.

In other team news, the following players have been named captains for the upcoming season: Campagna, Brendan Albert, Ben Seaman, Ryan Lentol, and James Murphy.

Preseason scrimmages are scheduled for Saturday, August 25, at 10 a.m. at home versus Mansfield, and Saturday, September 1, at 10 a.m. at Norwood High.

Canton will open the season with four consecutive road games beginning Friday, September 7, at Dighton-Rehoboth followed by games against Bellingham on September 15, Milford on September 21, and Foxboro on September 28.

The Bulldogs’ first home game is scheduled for Friday, October 5, at 7 p.m. versus rival Stoughton. The team will also celebrate the fourth annual Billy Cravens Night that evening in honor of the former legendary CHS halfback who starred for the team in the mid 1970s.
