While the CHS varsity baseball team had its share of ups and downs this spring, two Bulldog starters finished the season with brilliant offensive numbers.

Both of Canton’s leading hitters, senior centerfielder Matt Casamento and junior catcher Matt Pigeon, finished in the top 20 in the Hockomock League in batting average and both are candidates for the league all-star team. Casamento led the team with a .422 average and 27 total hits while Pigeon batted .368 with 21 hits.

As a team, the Bulldogs finished the regular season at 5-15 with wins against Milford, Foxboro, Attleboro, Sharon and Norwood. They ended the campaign with consecutive losses against Stoughton, 9-5 at home and 13-4 on the road.

In the first game against the Black Knights, Canton fell behind 9-1 but narrowed the gap with a four-run seventh inning. Casamento had two hits and an RBI while Nate Quan and Jake Aronson each drove in runs.

The highlight of the 13-4 loss at SHS was a two-run, inside the park home run by Pigeon. Head coach Greg Digirolamo said the ball hugged the first-base line and sailed all the way to the right field fence. Pigeon finished the effort with a headfirst slide into home plate.

Prior to the two games with Stoughton, the Bulldogs celebrated Senior Day with an 8-4 home win over Norwood in a game in which all of the seniors contributed. Nico Donovan had two hits and pitched three innings for the win; Ryan Hickey pitched three solid innings; Rob Wilkinson played right field and pitched the final inning; Aronson and Casamento each had two RBIs; and Tommy Delello had a hit and an RBI. Quan also contributed with two hits and an RBI and Owen Lehane had a hit and a pair of RBIs.
