Clines, Frances L.

By

Frances “Bub” L. Clines (Moore), 94, a lifelong resident of Canton, died peacefully May 24, 2018.

clinesBorn in Canton, she graduated from St. John’s Elementary and High School and attended Burdette College while working for Plymouth Rubber Company in Canton. She and her husband, Ted, operated “Clines Sport Shop” on Pleasant Street in Canton for over 50 years where she was secretary, treasurer, sales person, and assistant manager … “nothing like being self-employed!”

Fran was always proud to be a “townie” and was involved in the local town affairs. Bub was invited to join the Industrial Development Commission in 1973 and spent 27 years as an associate member, commissioner, and eventually executive secretary. She was a longtime member of the Springdale Civic Association, a member of the board of directors of Canton Cable Access (1998-2003), the East-West Road Study Committee (1974-1976, 1994-1999), the Traffic Study Committee (1999-2009), and the Local Government Advisory Committee (1991-1993).

Her respect and fierce love of the environment and watershed led her to involvement with the Canton River Watershed Watchdogs and Neponset River Watershed Association and to her 25-year battle to protect the Beaver Meadow Watershed from development. She was an associate member of the Canton Conservation Commission for 14 years and a longtime member of the Canton Historical Society. Fran also contributed to “Canton Comes of Age 1797-1997” detailing the history of the Springdale area where she lived most of her life. Fran served the Community Club of Canton in various capacities for 25 years. She was an avid reader and won an award for reading over 3,400 books. She also loved candlepin bowling and swimming. She was proud of her award for swimming “50 miles at 40 plus” in President Kennedy’s Program.
