Attorney John Dowd was a former Canton High School classmate of MAC’s. Many of you may not know his name but may member him for what he did in 1989 and what he will be doing in the coming months. Here’s a little background on the former Cantonite. John was a former U.S. attorney and a former Marine. His expertise in law focuses on white-collar crime. In 1989, Dowd’s investigation and report on behalf of Major League Baseball led to all-star player Pete Rose being banned from the sport for betting on games while he was manager of the Cincinnati Reds. Two weeks ago, president Donald Trump hired the well-known Washington, D.C.-based attorney as part of his new legal team. Dowd will now be leading President Trump’s personal legal team as top counsel … and to think, he got his start right here in Canton.

Talking about baseball, high school right-hander Hunter Greene, taken by the Cincinnati Reds as the second overall pick in last month’s amateur draft, has agreed to a minor league contract with a $7.23 million signing bonus.

The Trillium Brewing Company at 110 Shawmut Road in Canton was listed as one of the top 10 breweries in New England featuring a broad range of styles under the India Pale Ales umbrella. The Canton brewery is the maker of 104 types of beers. The New England farmhouse-style brewery opened in December 2015. Its Congress Street IPA was listed as the fifth best over thousands of IPAs to choose from across New England.

The Canton School Committee recently approved a 30 cent increase in the price of school lunches for all grades starting in September. Current lunch prices are $2.50 at the elementary schools; $2.75 at the middle school; and $2.75-$3 at Canton High School.

Equal Point Builders was awarded a $137,752 contract to repair the structural problems at the former Gridley School on Washington Street. The town-owned building was last used in the fall of 2016 for recreation programs.

Canton Fire Chief Charles Doody recently promoted four firefighters to lieutenant, which now gives the department a total of eight. The four new lieutenants are Jason Coleman, Jamie Meier, Tom Norton, and Ryan Patrician. Each shift at the department now has a full 11-man crew plus a captain.

Benjamin Franklin was the oldest signer of the Declaration of Independence at age 70 while Edward Rutledge was the youngest at age 26.

The Neponset River Watershed Association was founded 50 years ago. From its headwaters in Foxboro through Canton to Dorchester Bay, the river includes 14 watershed communities.

Canton residents can now pay all town bills online with a credit card, but a 2.95 percent charge will be added to the bill.

The USS Constitution is back in Boston Harbor after undergoing $12 million in maintenance work.

Correction: In the July 7 edition of this column, MAC listed the start time of Norwood’s popular Sunday summer concert series as 7 p.m. However, the correct times for the free weekly concerts are 6-8 p.m. The concerts are held every Sunday through August 27 at the bandstand in the town park at the intersection of Nahatan and Washington streets.

Everybody should do at least two things each day that he hates to do just for the practice.
