In an unprecedented performance, students from the Galvin Middle School in Canton swept the most coveted awards at this year’s MathCounts Metrosouth Chapter Competition held at the Sage School in Foxboro. The competition attracted 11 schools and 85 mathletes, including teams from Sharon, Milton Academy, Derby Academy, Westwood, Braintree, Foxboro, and Walpole.

Representing Canton at the competition were sixth grader Akshay Kumar and eighth graders Harshitha Valluri, Jack Hernon and Nam Pham on the primary team as well as individual students Aaron Mar, Alison Ye, Lauren Hernon, Semonti Choudhury, William Du and Liam Benson. The team’s coaches were Madhuri Valluri and Mantosh Kumar.

GMS won the best team award, followed by Sharon and Sage School for second and third place, while Akshay Kumar and Pham earned first and third place, respectively, in the individual rankings. Kumar, Pham, and Hernon also swept the top three places in the countdown round. With the victory, the Canton team qualified for the state competition to be held in March.

The top eight students who participated in the countdown round were given a maximum of 45 seconds per problem without a calculator. The round kicked off with complex probability, geometry and algebra questions, and to the audience’s amusement most of the answers came before the questions were even completed. Such was the pace and excellence on display during the entire program.

MathCounts is a nationwide middle school mathematics competition that inspires excellence and promotes achievement in mathematics through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state. It is one of the country’s largest and most successful education partnerships, recognized by five former U.S. presidents in White House ceremonies, and has received two White House citations for its outstanding initiative and service.

Having existed for 28 years, MathCounts has reached more than 6 million students through its programs and relies upon a national network of 17,000 volunteers.

Results at the state level determine the top four individuals and top coach who earn the opportunity to represent their state at the national finals. The grand finale is the Raytheon MathCounts National Competition, scheduled for May 14 in Orlando, Florida.
