New commuter rail schedule to impact Canton riders

Public input session scheduled for Feb. 22 in Norwood

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) recently announced a proposed new commuter rail schedule and is asking riders for their feedback on the changes.

commuterThe proposed schedule is slated to take effect on May 23 and will impact 18 commuter rail lines, including the Providence/Stoughton line, which makes regular daily stops at the Canton Center and Canton Junction stations. In addition to proposing new arrival times, the new schedule calls for additional inbound stops at both Canton stations — including four new nighttime trips into Boston via Canton Center — as well as a slight reduction in the number of outbound stops.

According to the MBTA, the changes are based on computer modeling and field testing and are designed to improve service by reducing the frequency of delays, representing more accurately the actual travel time along each line, and allowing sufficient time to perform necessary maintenance between trips.

Copies of all proposed new schedules, including a comparison with the current schedules, can be found at www.mbta.com. (Click here for the Providence/Stoughton line comparison.) Riders are being asked to review the proposed changes and complete a customer comment form.

Additionally, the MBTA has also scheduled a series of public meetings to discuss the proposed changes. The final meeting will take place this coming Monday, February 22, from 6-8 p.m. at the Coakley Middle School in Norwood.

A change.org petition is also currently circulating that is asking for no changes to be made on the Providence/Stoughton line. The petition, created by a Sharon resident, currently has 750 supporters.

Riders can also submit comments by mail to: MBTA, 10 Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116, Attention: Commuter Rail Schedule Committee; by phone at 617-222-3200; or by email at crschedules@mbta.com. The deadline for submitting public comments is Monday, February 22.
