Town delays start of new trash/recycling service

By

The new automated trash and recycling program will now start on Monday, July 7, instead of Tuesday, July 1, and the town is making arrangements to pick up old trash barrels and recycling bins.

The collection schedule will be the same as the current existing curbside service.

For the first two weeks of the new program, Republic will collect the old carts on route. Until September 7, residents can also take them to the DPW facility on Bolivar Street where a 30-yard container will be placed.

The town is negotiating with Tony Will to use his property across from the Pine Street Yard Waste-Solar Farm facility to locate a drop-off area for bulk items and old barrels.

Republic Services will begin putting the new trash and recycling carts together at the Metropolis Rink on June 18. Taped to the underside of the barrel lid will be general program information. A private third party contractor will be conducting the setup and neighborhood delivery of the carts from June 18 until July 3.

Town Administrator Bill Friel said single, double, and triple unit residential locations will be getting two barrels each, one for trash and the other for recyclable materials. Friel said multi-unit condos, for the most part, will be serviced with recycling and rubbish dumpsters and will not get carts because of site limitations.

Friel said that an electronics bin will still be placed at the DPW yard on Bolivar Street. Republic will also pick up electronics for a $10-$15 fee by appointment and will pick up one bulk item for free at the curbside each week. Additional bulk items and appliances will be picked up for free as well, but an appointment must be made in advance by calling 1-800-222-5158.

At the June 10 selectmen’s meeting, the board will vote on a process for residents to acquire a second trash or recycling cart.

The new trash-recycling service has been advertised on public communication boards throughout town and an electronic billboard seen on Route 95 South. Information is also available on the town website.
