Schools approve earlier start to 14-15 calendar

By

The Canton Public Schools will have an earlier than normal start next year after the Canton Teachers Association voted to alter its contract to allow for a return prior to Labor Day.

Under the revised school calendar approved last week by the School Committee, the new first day for students in grades 1-12 will be Tuesday, September 2 — the day after Labor Day — and the first day for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students will be Thursday, September 4.

The new first day for teachers, approved by a vote of the CTA members, will be Wednesday, August 27, with a professional development day to follow on Thursday, August 28. Orientation for new teachers will be held a week earlier, on Wednesday and Thursday, August 20 and 21.

The result of starting the school year earlier will be an earlier summer vacation, with the last day of school set for June 17 if there are no snow days.

See this week’s Canton Citizen for a full recap of the May 8 School Committee meeting.
