Robert J. Doyle, 72, of Canton, passed away suddenly at home May 1.

doyleBorn in Tacoma, Washington, he was raised in Rhode Island and graduated from East Providence High School. He went on to attend the University of Rhode Island and earned his law degree from Boston University.

He was a partner with Steinberg Doyle in Newton for many years. During his legal career he was a mentor to many lawyers, co-founder of the National Lawyers Guild in Boston, and was an attorney for the American Indian movement at Wounded Knee in 1975.

He had lived in Canton since 1988 and enjoyed all outdoor activities, especially sailing, skiing and kayaking.

Beloved husband of Diane R. Givens. Father of Jason D. Givens-Doyle of Brooklyn, NY. Brother of Kathleen Thornton of Westport, CT. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the National Lawyers Guild, 14 Beacon St., #407, Boston, MA 02108. Arrangements by the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home, 455 Washington Street.
