Canton firefighters contain diesel spill on Rte. 138

By

At least 100 gallons of diesel fuel were contained following an accident between a garbage truck and a box truck on Route 138 near Farrington Lane and the junction of Route 128 on Friday, April 18, around 4 p.m. Both drivers were able to exit their vehicles prior to the arrival of police and firefighters. One driver was transported to Milton Hospital for minor injuries.

Fire Chief Charlie Doody praised the quick response of Lt. John Hutchinson and the crew from the Ponkapoag Fire Station for helping to contain the fuel, which began spilling from the saddle tanks attached to each truck. Using containment pools and absorbents, Doody said firefighters were able to prevent the fuel from seeping into the earth or into any of the nearby catch basins.

Doody said representatives from the state Department of Environmental Protection came out to ensure that there was no environmental damage. The Fire Department also received assistance from Clean Harbors.

Deputy Police Chief Helena Rafferty said the trucks were headed south on Route 138 toward Stoughton when one truck attempted a left-hand turn onto Farrington Lane. No citations were issued by police. Traffic was slowed but not rerouted. The Fire Department called in several off-duty personnel to assist in the clean-up efforts.
