Neponset St. checkpoint nets four OUI arrests

On Saturday night, April 12, the Canton Police Department, in conjunction with the Massachusetts State Police, conducted a sobriety checkpoint on Neponset Street. According to Lt. Patty Sherrill, a brief interaction was made with the operator of every vehicle passing through this checkpoint during the initiative. Only four arrests were made throughout the evening, down from six the year before and 13 in 2012.

According to Lt. Sherrill, Canton Police has partnered with the State Police and the Highway Safety Division of the Executive Office of Public Safety & Security to promote public safety on the roadways. “Our goal is to achieve a reduction in the number of fatal and personal motor vehicle crashes and to create safer roadways for all,” she said. “Additional checkpoints in various locations are expected to be conducted throughout the year.”

State Police arrest Wisconsin man after foot pursuit

Massachusetts State Police arrested a 40-year-old Wisconsin man on drug trafficking charges after a foot pursuit that ended on Green Lane in Canton on Saturday, April 12. The suspect, Hector Rivera Martinez, was originally pulled over around 10 a.m. for a motor vehicle violation while driving on Route 93. When the State Police K-9 unit arrived on scene, Rivera jumped over a guard rail and ran down an embankment.

Police later found four kilograms of cocaine hidden in the van he was driving. Canton police were notified of the foot chase and Canton paramedics treated the suspect for head cuts following his apprehension. Martinez was charged with trafficking a Class B substance and was held on $200,000 bail pending his arraignment in Dedham District Court.
