Despite losses last week to Attleboro (8-2) and North Attleboro (15-0), CHS head baseball coach JP Scott is excited about the talent and potential of this year’s team.

In last Thursday’s season opener against Attleboro, senior captain Sam Larson started on the mound and pitched well through five innings, but the Blue Bombardiers broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning.

Kevin O’Brien and Mike Timperio both had two hits and scored a run for Canton in the loss.

The next day, the Bulldogs traveled to North Attleboro and lost 15-0. Sophomore Kevin Powers got the start and left in the third inning with the team trailing 5-1. O’Brien had a double in the loss, while Arthur McNally and Griffin Jerrier had one hit apiece.

Canton finished 4-16 last season before losing to Medway in the preliminary round of the Division 3 south sectional tournament.

The team has several returning veterans, including senior captains Larson and O’Brien, along with Powers, senior Wyatt Golledge, and junior Pat Vartanian. Starting pitchers are Larson, Powers, Jerrier, and Liam Murphy.

O’Brien tied for the team’s highest batting average last season at .333. Larson led the team in stolen bases, played excellent defense in centerfield, and was one of the team’s top pitchers.

Scott noted that Golledge showed promise last year as a hitter with five extra-base hits, and Vartanian finished tied for the league lead in homeruns as a sophomore. Powers also showed spark at shortstop and as a pitcher.

The Bulldogs also have a few promising newcomers, including Timperio, who transferred from BC High, and Rylan Lemaine, who transferred from Acton-Boxborough.

With warmer weather expected this week, the Bulldogs were due to face Franklin on Tuesday and will host Milford today at 3:45 p.m. Next week, they will travel to Oliver Ames on Monday, April 14, and Sharon on Wednesday, April 16, with both games starting at 3:45 p.m.
