Hansen hoop game to benefit Furbush children

By

Students and staff at the Hansen Elementary School will be facing off in the Canton High School gymnasium starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 4, to raise money for a Canton family struck by tragedy.

The Hansen Staff vs. Students Basketball Game will benefit the Furbush children, who lost both of their parents, Kristen and Stephen, within a span of two months earlier this year. The Hansen CAPT is doing what it does best to show its support — raising money.

“Canton schools are always fundraising for the enrichment of their students,” said Sharon Stemm, a Hansen parent and CAPT member. “On April 4, we are putting all of our efforts towards enriching the lives of a Canton family. All proceeds and any additional donation can be made out to Hansen CAPT with ‘Furbush’ in the memo and will go directly to the family to help with current expenses.”

Hansen students who have pre-registered and paid a $6 donation will play basketball against Hansen teachers and staff, while spectators will enjoy the game, a slice of pizza, a temporary tattoo station, a candy kabob table, raffles, prizes and more. Adult admission is $10 and student admission is $5. The halftime show will feature a “Parent Shoot Off” and performances from local Dance Out dancers, who just last month produced a fundraiser for the Furbush Children’s Fund at the Norwood Theatre that raised more than $7,500.

“I feel so privileged to work in this community,” said Hansen Principal Peter Boucher. “The teachers, the parents, and even students immediately wanted  to do something to help this family. We hope to fill the CHS gym with Canton families and cheer on the students as they play against their teachers. In getting together for this cause, it is my hope that we all remember that we are stronger as one, fortunate to have each other and always a team.”

The Hansen CAPT is depending on widespread town support of this event and encourages any and all Canton residents to join “Team Hansen” and come and show their support. Any questions can be directed to Sharon Stemm at auntieshar01@gmail.com, and all donations can be sent or dropped off to the Hansen School at 25 Pecunit Street and made out to Hansen CAPT with “Furbush” in the memo.
