New Greenlodge St. parking system proposed

By

Town Administrator Bill Friel has proposed to selectmen a new decal-sticker system for the Greenlodge Street parking area — similar to the Pine Street Yard Waste program — that would save motorists money while also significantly lowering costs for the town.

Currently, voucher booklets are issued with 10 tickets costing $20 for residents and $30 for non-residents. The program nets the town over $35,000 per year; however, Friel said the cost of printing the vouchers is expensive — an estimated $8,000 per year.

Under Friel’s new proposal, motorists could purchase a three-month pass for $115.92, which equates to a daily rate of $1.84 and a total savings of $10.08. A six-month pass would cost $216.32, or $1.69 per day, saving the motorist $39.68, while a 12-month pass would cost $382.50, or $1.53 per day, and save a total of $117.50.

Overall this system would net the town over $44,000, but the stickers would only cost $650.

Friel said the sticker system would save motorists even more when compared to rates at the Route 128/University Ave. MBTA commuter rail station. Based on a daily rate of $4, a motorist parking at the station would pay $252 for three months, $512 for six months, and $1,000 for 12 months.

Under Friel’s plan, each sticker will be color coded, aiding police monitoring.

Selectmen will review the proposal and await comment from selectmen John Connolly and Victor Del Vecchio, who were not present at Tuesday night’s meeting. Selectmen Chairman Sal Salvatori said he favored Friel’s plan but suggested some daily parking stickers be made available for people who park infrequently.

The sticker would be obtained at Town Hall through the Finance Department office. Friel said he will look into the option of allowing motorists to purchase the stickers with a credit card through an online system.
