Garden Club, schools to present ‘Artists in Bloom’

The Canton Garden Club and the Canton Public Schools’ Visual Arts Department invites the community to their first annual “Artists in Bloom” exhibit beginning Friday, February 28, through Sunday, March 2, at Pequitside Farm, 79 Pleasant Street in Canton.

The opening reception will be held Friday evening from 5-9 p.m., and refreshments will be served. The event will be open to the public from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, March 1 and 2.

“Artists in Bloom” will feature approximately 100 mixed-media artworks representing the Canton Public Schools, with 25 pieces interpreted in floral arrangements created by Canton Garden Club members.

The event is modeled after “Art in Bloom,” the popular springtime exhibit held annually at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. As a frequent participant at Art in Bloom over the past few years, Canton Garden Club Vice President Joan Marie Driscoll wanted to see if she could replicate the experience in Canton.

“My experience has been so positive that I wanted to share it with others,” said Driscoll. “The idea of having Canton’s own [Art in Bloom event] was presented to the board of gardeners, and once they were on board, all we needed was artwork to interpret.”

Driscoll decided to pitch the idea to CPS Visual Arts Coordinator Joyce Stenmon, and the two got together last fall to make the event happen.

“We have such creative children here in Canton,” said Stenmon. “I envision artworks from every grade and every school represented at this event.”

The organizers chose Pequitside Farm as the venue because of its potential to transform into the perfect art gallery to showcase both artwork and floral arrangements.

Admission to the event is $5 per person and includes three tickets for drawings. The proceeds will be used to establish a scholarship for a deserving Canton High School senior pursuing a future in the visual arts. For more information, call 781-821-5500.
