Property auction nets $361K for town

By

The town of Canton was able to collect $361,000 through a public real estate auction held on Thursday, December 12, at the Canton Public Library. Town Administrator Bill Friel said the auction attracted 50 interested bidders and was very successful.

The auction was originally to feature three parcels; however, the town was informed by the land court just prior to the event that the owner of 65 Pleasant Circle was able to pay all of its back taxes, fees and other associated costs.

The winning bid for a house at 35 Turnpike Street went for $170,000 and an adjoining parcel sold for $150,000. Friel said all of the money, including $41,000 in back taxes, goes into the general town treasury. He said the auction proved so successful that the town would consider holding another one in the future. Friel thanked the DPW, Buildings and Property Maintenance Department, and the treasurer/collector’s office for their efforts in planning the auction.
