A 16-year-old juvenile is facing motor vehicle charges following a drag racing accident on John Road on Saturday, November 9, around 9 p.m.

Police reported that the car hit a tree, although both the driver and his passenger were able to walk away from the crash unharmed. The juvenile was charged with operating a motor vehicle in violation of a license restriction, speeding in violation of a special regulation, and a marked lanes violation.

The accident occurred in an industrial area where youths have been known to gather for drag racing. Police Chief Ken Berkowitz said the area was a hotspot several years ago but that this was the first incident of drag racing reported in a long time.

Berkowitz said the department has a “zero tolerance” approach to drag racing and those who are caught will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Police stopped cars between 11:30 p.m. and 3 a.m. and netted five arrests of operating under the influence and drug offenses as well as two summons. Police Lt. Patty Sherrill said other searches will be done periodically by both organizations.
