Town should embrace single-stream recycling

By

Dear Editor:

Canton has the chance to enter the 21st century with the adoption of single-stream recycling!

At long last, the Board of Selectmen is entertaining a waste disposal contract that will include this service. Currently, we are limited to recycling in little blue bins with no covers. The bins require indoor storage and also create a real mess. Single stream means that homeowners will use a large, dedicated trash container with a hinged lid to store all recyclables. Recyclables do not have to be sorted. Instead, the materials just need to be placed in the bin.

We should not be storing paper and cardboard indoors because of the threat of fire. With no covers, the recyclables fall out when bringing them to the curb — a genuine aggravation. The recyclable materials get wet in the rain and snow. The plastic and paper create a weekly neighborhood mess when the recyclables blow around in the wind all night, waiting for pickup the next day.

Going single stream will provide safer storage, easier transport, and a cleaner Canton. I support single-stream recycling in Canton.

Sincerely,

Jim Park
