Gourmet Garden opens new location in Canton
By Mary Ann PriceGourmet Garden opened in the Village Shoppes in May, bringing not just a new restaurant to town but a new concept as well. The eatery, located in the spot formerly occupied by the Talbots store, offers Chinese dishes as well as sushi and hibachi meals. They also serve some Thai dishes.
Manager Lin Choi, who is originally from Taiwan, believes that Gourmet Garden stands out for its good food and diversified menu.
“A lot of Chinese restaurants only have Chinese and Japanese food,” she said. “We have the combination.”
Two chefs prepare sushi behind two large clear cases. Dozens of customers can enjoy watching a chef prepare their dinner at one of the three large hibachi tables that occupy the left side of the dining room. Booths, tables and a bar fill the rest of the room, which has hardwood floors and is decorated in earth tones. Seasonal outdoor seating is also available on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant.
“We don’t use MSG (monosodium glutamate) at all,” Choi said. “We do what the customer requires.” Many of the items on the menu can also be made gluten-free.
General manager Angus Wu, who is also one of the owners, was born in China and moved to the United States 20 years ago. “The Pad Thai,” he said of his restaurant’s offerings, “I love that. And the General Gau’s chicken. A lot of the dishes are organic. We use organic rice for the sushi. We use organic chicken.”
“The five star shrimp is very popular,” Choi added. “And chicken or shrimp with pine nuts — it’s like a lettuce wrap. The Beijing duck is very good, very fresh.”
Gourmet Garden patrons also have the option of ordering akai rice with their meals instead of white or brown rice. Choi said that akai rice, which is imported from France, is healthier than other kinds of rice.
Gourmet Garden has two other locations, in Swampscott and Hingham. The Boston Herald has named the Swampscott location as the Best Sushi on the North Shore.
Choi said the reception from local customers in Canton, Stoughton and Sharon has been very positive. “They say, ‘Finally you’re here!’” she said.
Gourmet Garden is available to host small parties in its dining room. Delivery is available within a five-mile radius. The restaurant is open Sundays through Thursdays from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information or to download a menu, go to www.gourmetgarden.com.
