Field hockey team nabs 4th straight win

The red-hot CHS field hockey team made it four in a row last week with convincing road wins over Stoughton and Taunton.

The Bulldogs, which opened the season with a flurry of ties, are now a very solid 6-1-3 overall and trail only undefeated Oliver Ames for the Davenport Division lead.

“It was nice to have a strong week and get some goals and get some confidence,” remarked head coach Fior Griffin, who continues to have sky-high expectations for this year’s team.

Although neither game last week was a blowout, Griffin said the girls out-shot and generally outplayed both opponents by a considerable margin en route to wins of 3-0 and 2-0 — their third and fourth shutouts in as many games.

The Bulldogs also got contributions from several different players, including senior Katie Kelleher, who had a standout performance against Stoughton and scored one of the team’s two goals against Taunton.

Other top contributors included senior captains Kellie Stigas (2 goals) and Jackie Merrigan (1 goal) and sophomore Lindsey Nolte, who had a goal against Stoughton.

Canton also got contributions from some of its younger players, including sophomore Emily Rizzitano and freshman Caroline Hagan, who saw her first varsity action in the game against Taunton.

Griffin said the Bulldogs should only get better with the impending return of senior captain Casey Considine, who has been out with a hand injury. A vocal leader and the team’s top defender, Considine’s absence has been felt on the field, although Griffin said the girls have had some nice individual efforts on defense from players such as Mary Nee and Kelsey Trerice.

This week, the team faced a tough stretch with games against King Philip on Monday and Mansfield on Wednesday. The girls return to action tomorrow night at home against Milford, followed by a big road showdown with first-place OA next Tuesday, October 15.
