Underdog Turnpike Cafe wins over-30 title

By

Turnpike Café, which finished fifth in the regular season with a record of 5-8, went 3-0 on championship Sunday to win the Canton Men’s Over 30 Softball League title. Turnpike Café beat Loughran Electric and Emma’s Pub — the top two teams in the regular season — to take the championship.

Turnpike co-manager Ryan Shaughnessy said the team’s MVP was Dave Monahan, who came in and pitched every game after their original pitcher had to leave the team. “He did a great job all year and kept us in most games,” Shaughnessy said of Monahan.

As for the championship game, Shaughnessy said the “big story” was the bottom of the order, particularly Nick Lance, who went 4 for 5 with several key RBIs.

“Kevin Shaughnessy also seemed to be on base every time he got up,” he said, “not just in the playoffs but all season long. The defense also played great, especially Brady Martin and Mike O’Brien, who had a bunch of double plays throughout the three-win day on Sunday.”

Other team members included Steve Shaughnessy, Bill Mulvey, Jim Peters, Timmy Arico, Pat McCloud, Charlie Gillis, Chris Sykes, Mike Faccinni, Mike Wice, and Glenn Corrado.
