Fire Dept. responds to separate accidents, fuel spills

By

A tractor hit both a utility and traffic light pole at the intersection of Randolph and Turnpike streets (Rte. 138) just after 6 a.m. on Friday, August 2, causing a fuel spill and a traffic signal outage that lasted several hours. The driver of the truck, Claude McDaniel, 44, of Passaic, New Jersey, was cited by police and will be summoned to face charges of a marked lanes violation and negligent operation of a motor vehicle. The collision caused 110 gallons of diesel fuel to spill on the roadway. Fire Lt. Donnie Lester said six firefighters, along with representatives of the state Department of Environmental Protection, treated storm drains and cleaned up the area. Traffic was rerouted for several hours until the scene was cleaned up and the traffic signal repaired.

Four hours later at 12: 30 p.m., Canton, Sharon, and Norwood firefighters responded to a four-vehicle collision at Route 95 northbound near exit 11 in Canton. Three people were transported to Norwood Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The accident involved three cars and a box truck and resulted in a large fuel spill along Rte. 95. The road was closed for nearly 90 minutes.
