Season ends for Legion Post 24, Canton A’s

By

The Canton American  Legion Post 24 baseball team advanced to the south sectional playoffs last week — the furthest the squad has gone in team history — before being eliminated with two losses in three games.

Canton lost to Brockton 6-0, beat Easton 16-6 (the first-place team from District 9 North), and was ousted again by Brockton 3-2 in a do-or-die showdown July 30 at Rockland Stadium. Had Canton beaten Brockton, the team would have advanced to the Bracket A finals.

Canton was one of only five teams in the 18-team district to reach the double-elimination tournament.

The team had qualified for the postseason after finishing 13-11 and then upset Foxboro 3-0 in the District 6 playoffs.

Legion coaches Greg Lyons, Al Jackson, and Walter Mann posted the following comment on the team website: “We are extremely proud of 15 players who showed the true meaning of teamwork in making the sectional playoffs.”

Both the Legion team and the Legion Junior team, which also made the playoffs, will be honored at an awards dinner at the American Legion hall on Tuesday, August 13, at 6:30 p.m.

Scheduling problems nix Canton A’s playoff  trip to CT

The Canton A’s baseball team finished its summer season with a 7-0 loss to first-place Braintree, and because of logistical and scheduling problems they were unable to field a team to compete in the Stan Musial Tournament in Connecticut last weekend.

Canton A’s head coach Kee Arguimbau, who was named the Cranberry League’s Manager of the Year, said the tournament schedule kept changing and his players had not planned for the additional time off in early August.

“It was a new problem we had not anticipated,” said a disappointed Arguimbau.

The A’s finished the season in second place in the Cranberry League with an overall record of 16-10, including a 1-1 mark in the playoffs. Braintree prevailed in the league championship game at Rockland Stadium after scoring six runs — all unearned — in the fourth inning off A’s pitcher Dave Roberto of Sharon. The A’s committed three errors in what Arguimbau said was their “worst game of the year.”

Despite the loss to Braintree, the A’s were still eligible to send a team to the Stan Musial Tournament due to their impressive record and their previous playoff win over Weymouth.

In other team news, two A’s pitchers, Roberto and Zack Walker, were named to the All-CBL first team. Both were also nominated for league Pitcher of the Year honors.
