Canton EMS responds to fatal crash on Rte. 95
By Mike BergerCanton firefighters and paramedics responded to a fatal accident that killed a 33-year-old Boston man on Route 95 southbound near the Canton-Norwood exit in the early morning hours of Monday, July 22.
The accident closed I-95 south in that location for several hours before being reopened to traffic at 8:30 a.m.
Around 4:15 a.m., emergency personnel from Norwood, Canton and Sharon, as well as the State Police responded to the accident scene. According to Canton Fire and State Police reports, a Lexus sedan veered into another lane and hit a Chevy Silverado pickup truck. The Lexus hit the median strip and landed against a bridge abutment. The operator of the Lexus was ejected and declared dead on the scene. The operator of the pickup truck was not injured. State Police are leading the investigation into the accident.
Fire Dept. responds to motorcycle, MV accidents
Canton paramedics transported a male motorcyclist to Boston Medical Center for head injuries suffered as a result of an accident that occurred on Thursday, July 18, around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Randolph and York streets.
Approximately 45 minutes later, firefighters and paramedics responded to another accident on High Street where a motorist hit a utility pole. The driver refused medical treatment. NStar and Verizon were notified and the part of the street around the accident was blocked off for several hours until utility crews installed a new pole.
Metro LEC conducts mock child abduction drill
On Wednesday, July 24, the Metropolitan Law Enforcement Council (Metro-LEC), a regional task force of 43 area police and sheriff’s departments, conducted a “mock” child abduction drill in Norwood.
According to a press release issued by Metro-LEC, “This proactive drill is intended to simulate a terrifying and emotionally draining scenario for anyone involved and make our response as real life as possible. It will offer us the welcome opportunity to work with our state and federal law enforcement partners as they assist in a force-multiplier role — collaborating in amber alert notification, crime scene services, and technological expertise. It will ensure that every law enforcement official responding to this ‘call out’ understands their function in the process prior to a real life event occurring.”
Upon successful completion of the drill, Metro LEC will become one of only 19 nationally certified Child Abduction Response Teams (CART) in the country and only the second team in the northeast to receive this honor. Several members of the Canton Police Department are part of Metro LEC, including Police Chief Ken Berkowitz, Deputy Police Chief Helena Findlen, K-9 Officer Scott Brown and his K-9 partner Bosco, among others.
