FAA approves new flight path over Canton

By

A new flight path from Logan International Airport that travels over Milton, Canton and Randolph has been approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, according to a statement released by the FAA last month.

The revised departure route from Runway 33 Left, which travels along the eastern edge of Canton, went into effect June 5 following an extensive environmental review. The FAA had determined that the new path, which was designed to improve safety and efficiency, would produce no “significant environmental impacts.”

Furthermore, the new route, according to the FAA, was “designed to follow as closely as possible the existing flight tracks that jet aircraft use today when they take off from Runway 33 Left.”

However, prior to the FAA decision, residents in both Milton and Canton had voiced their opposition to the flight path, citing concerns over increased noise and air traffic. Their complaints eventually caught the attention of state Senator Brian A. Joyce and others, who successfully pushed for an extension of the public comment period.

Meanwhile, a group of Milton residents are hoping to persuade the administration to reverse its ruling, according to a recent Boston Globe report.

The group, which is calling itself the Milton Citizens Committee on Aviation Impacts, reportedly held a meeting at Milton Town Hall last month in which they discussed the flight path’s impacts and outlined their objectives — including, according to the Globe, “dispersing the flights so that more towns share the burden of noise and environmental effects.”

The FAA plans to reevaluate the flight path in December as part of a six-month post-implementation review. For a complete copy of the FAA’s final environmental assessment or its finding of no significant impact, go to www.bostonrnavea.com.
