Canton A’s climb over .500 with weekend sweep

By

The Canton A’s have been playing better baseball as of late, and it has shown in the standings as they recently climbed over .500 with a doubleheader sweep over Brockton on Sunday, winning 13-3 and 11-7. Overall, the A’s are 5-4 and in the middle of the pack in the seven-member Cranberry League.

Besides Sunday’s wins over Brockton, the A’s have beaten Rockland 6-5, Weymouth 3-2 and Kingston 4-3. They have lost to league-leading Braintree three times, including two games by identical scores of 8-0 and another by a score of 7-4. Their other loss came against Weymouth 3-2.

Head coach Kee Arguimbau said more consistent pitching has led the way for the A’s in the early going. Pitcher Dave Roberto of Sharon has won two of the games and Zack Walker was named league Pitcher of the Week for his 3-2 win over Weymouth. Walker allowed just one earned run on five hits and struck out three in a complete game. Another win was earned by Mark Nelson, who left the team for the balance of the summer to teach underprivileged children across the country.

Leading hitters for the A’s include centerfielder Travis Ritchie of Massasoit Community College with a .320 batting average, catcher Cory Albanese (.350), shortstop-second baseman Andrew Vandini (.300), and eight-year veteran Joe Belmosto (.330).

The A’s were due to play Brockton two more times this week — home on Tuesday and away on Wednesday — followed by an away game against Braintree today, June 20, at 6 p.m. and a doubleheader on Sunday, June 23, at Rockland at 5 and 7 p.m.
