With last week’s 2-1 win over Dedham, the CHS baseball team was able to squeeze into the Division 3 south sectional tournament by virtue of winning 50 percent of its games against D3 opponents.

Despite a 4-16 overall record, the Bulldogs beat Dedham twice over the season and will likely enter the playoffs as one of the lowest seeds, meaning they will open on the road against one of the division’s best teams.

Head coach JP Scott said the pairings were due to be announced on Tuesday, May 28, with the tournament getting underway Thursday (today), May 30.

The Bulldogs went 1-2 over the final week of the regular season, beating Dedham but falling to Stoughton 9-3 and Cardinal Spellman 6-3.

In the playoff-clinching win over Dedham, senior captain Jimmy Fitzgerald threw a complete game, allowing just one run with seven strikeouts. It was his fourth win of the season, and he also came up big at the plate with two hits. Sam Larson was 2 for 3 with a double, a run scored, and a stolen base. Freshman Kevin Powers was 1 for 3 with an RBI.

Powers started on the mound against Stoughton and allowed six runs over four innings. Sophomore Liam Murphy pitched three innings in relief and allowed two runs while striking out two batters.

Steve Mullaney was 2 for 4 with a run scored. Pat Vartanian was 1 for 3 with an RBI, and Kevin O’Brien was 1 for 4 with a double and a run scored.

In the loss to Cardinal Spellman, Larson pitched six innings and allowed just one earned run. He struck out six for a no decision. Powers finished 2 for 4 with a run scored and a stolen base. Justin Rudy was 2 for 3 with a double, an RBI, a run scored, and a stolen base. Mullaney was 1 for 4 with an RBI.

Whenever the first playoff game is played, Scott said he would likely use Fitzgerald as the starting pitcher. “How we play depends on the day,” Scott said. “We have been getting really good pitching. If we get good defense and a couple of hits, we can win.”
