Girls’ indoor track team earns 3rd straight win

The CHS girls’ indoor track team continued to excel with its third consecutive win, a 55-40 triumph over Foxboro last week, improving its league record to 3-1.

The boys’ team continues to improve but is still looking for its first win after falling to the Warriors 61-30.

Lauren Berman won the 1,000 meters with a time of 3:11.85 and then came back and clinched the meet by winning the two-mile in 11:51.28. Berman won both races by more than four seconds.

Another big scorer for the girls’ team was Mellyn Costello, who won the 55-meter high hurdles (9.61) and the long jump (14’2”) and placed second in the 55-meter dash (7.96). Her second-place finish in the dash ended her winning streak of ten consecutive events this season. Costello was due to face two of the league’s top hurdlers this week when Canton takes on Oliver Ames at the Reggie Lewis Track Center.

Another double winner for Canton was Michaela Kelly, who won the 300 with a time of 45.65 and the 600 in 1:44.88. Kelly is undefeated in the 600 through four meets and will face her toughest challenge this week against the league’s top 600 runner.

Freshman Catherine Song ran the mile for the first time and placed second with a time of 5:52.59. Seniors Alexis Njoku and Nickishia Menardy had their best throws of the year and placed first and second in the shot put with distances of 23’6” and 22’8,” respectively.

Head coach Dan Ashman, who coaches both the boys’ and girls’ teams, said despite the boys’ loss, there were some “great performances.”

Obi Nwankwo won the 55-meter dash in 7.08 seconds but had to withdraw from the 300 with a quad strain.

Craig Mills won the 600 with a time of 1:27.15. Ian Mills won the 1,000 meters with a time of 2:46.06, almost four seconds better than his previous best time.

Both Craig and Ian Mills also ran great legs on the winning 4×400 relay team.
