After a heartbreaking Friday night for Canton fans that saw three of its fall teams eliminated from postseason play, the CHS varsity volleyball team gave the Bulldog faithful a reason to celebrate as the girls defeated perennial powerhouse Medfield 3-2 at Hudson High School on Saturday to claim the Division 2 central sectional title.

The victory marks a new high point for veteran coach Pat Cawley and her squad, who won all 19 of their regular season games and entered the tournament as the top overall seed. Earlier this week they beat No. 8 Foxboro and No. 4 Westboro before outlasting the second-seeded Warriors in Saturday’s sectional finals.

The Bulldogs are now a perfect 22-0 and will battle north champion Melrose (24-1) in the Division 2 state semifinals on Tuesday, November 13, at Billerica High School beginning at 7 p.m.

In other CHS sports news:

* The 12^th seeded boys’ soccer team fell to No. 1 Medway 2-0 on Friday in the south sectional semifinals. It was the seventh consecutive season that coach Danny Erickson’s squad has reached the semifinal round. The boys finish the season at 12-7-2, including a 3-1 mark in the tournament.

* The fourth seeded girls’ soccer team, the defending Eastern Mass. champions, lost to No. 8 Duxbury in the south sectional semifinals on Friday. Considered one of the top teams in all of Division 2, the girls lost the game on penalty kicks after battling the Dragons to a 1-1 draw. They finish the season at 16-2-1.

* The fifth seeded field hockey team lost to No. 1 Apponequet 2-1 in the south sectional semifinals on Friday. The Bulldogs had been aiming for their fourth consecutive south title but came up one round short, falling to the undefeated Lakers in overtime. The team finishes the season at 14-2-4.
